Kathy Strong, Going My Way12:02 p.m. PST December 3, 2016 (Photo: courtesy of Mike Kelley/Air Hollywood) 8CONNECTTWEETLINKEDINCOMMENTEMAILMORE If you long for the nostalgic days of flying when passengers dressed up, wined and dined and enjoyed plenty of personal service, then now you can take a “fantasy flight” to relive a romantic era when flying was one of the best parts of your vacation. Before the long security lines, cramped seats and packaged food, airline travel was an experience, especially flying first class on Pan Am in the 1970s when comfort and service were a given. Pan Am’s famous jet-age blue globe logo has remained in our culture long after the airline’s demise in 1991 as a symbol of American belief […]

Back in the day, there were no security lines or body scanners and whoever accompanied you to the airport, could actually sit with you at the gate until you were ready to embark. When you walked onto a Pam Am plane, let’s say, you were greeted with lovely, smiling hostesses who were not being distracted by cell phones and most cordially escorted you to your seat. Well folks, if you would like to relive that glorious time, I have just the spot […]

NPR’s “Morning Edition” – Hollywood Jet Gives Fearful Fliers the Courage to Soar

By Daniel Hajek May 17, 2016   The jet sitting at Air Hollywood’s studio near the Burbank airport in Southern California was once the charter plane of the Los Angeles Lakers. These days, it serves a much different role — mostly as the set for movies and TV commercials. But the group walking on board the day I recently visited wasn’t there to film a scene. They were part of a two-day class for fearful fliers. For participant Ronnie Michel, it was the first time in six years that he’d seen the inside of a plane. “You hear the plastic shaking, the weird noises,” he noted. “I can see the top of people’s heads sitting in front of me. It’s […]

QUARTZ – Where Hollywood Goes to Make its Fake Planes Look Real

March 22, 2016 When Martin Scorsese needed to shoot a scene of a drunken Leonardo DiCaprio on a jet plane for the film The Wolf of Wall Street, he could have built his own fake fuselage, or rented a 747. Of course, that would also have cost several hundred thousand dollars. So the director turned to Air Hollywood instead. It’s a 60,000-square foot cluster of low-slung warehouses on the outskirts of LA, where filmmakers can choose from four complete airplane interiors, including cockpits, bathrooms and working galleys. There is also a fake terminal, a security gate (with a half dozen variations of admonishing TSA boarding signs) and an expansive prop room offering authentic-looking boarding passes, foil peanut bags and pretty […]
