By Ben Granucci December 13, 2013 Original Story In 1998, Talaat Captan was a writer and movie producer shooting scenes in an airport for the movie Ground Control, starring Kiefer Sutherland. After experiencing great difficulty coordinating the logistics involved with filming in an active airport, Mr. Captan knew that there had to be a better way. A self described aviation enthusiast himself, he founded Air Hollywood shortly after filming wrapped. The goal of Air Hollywood is to have a studio where all types of aviation scenes can be produced in a film-friendly environment. We recently visited the Air Hollywood studios and got to see all that they had to offer. Right this way, please! We started with a tour of […]

GIZMODO — For $300, You Can “Fly” on a Perfectly Recreated Pan Am 747

By Kelsey Campbell-Dollaghan September 18, 2014 Original Story Pan Am ceased to exist 23 years ago, but the defunct airline enjoys a dedicated cult following—whose fixation with the past that doesn’t seem quite so odd when considered in light of the stinky, knee-obsessed, genital-groping present of air travel. Now, for roughly what it costs to fly to Ft. Lauderdale, you can turn back the clock. Air Hollywood is a company in LA that specializes in movie sets for airplane footage—this is where, for example, airborne scenes in Bridesmaids and The Wolf of Wall Street were filmed. It maintains multiple aircraft for film crews to use, and allows them to alter the construction of the planes in order to get just […]

The company is now offering monthly dinner parties aboard an exact replica of a Boeing 747, decked out just like Pan Am flights were laid out in the 1970’s. There are two packages offered: for $200, guests can have a Clipper Class seat – complete with cocktails, dinner, and an in-flight movie. For $300, visitors are treated to […]

INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS TIMES — The Pan Am Experience Invites You To Step Back In Time

By Ismat Sarah Mangla September 19, 2014 Original Story Air travel wasn’t always the harrying, knee-defending, fee-collecting experience it is today. In its fabled heyday, flying was filled with glamour: Food served on real china, plush seats, endless cocktails and smartly dressed travelers were the norm. And Pan American World Airways, which collapsed in 1991, was the epitome of that luxury in the sky. Now, a company in Los Angeles wants to take you back in time so you can see for yourself. The Pan Am Experience offers monthly dinner parties aboard a replica Boeing 747 styled like a Pan Am Jumbo Jet from the 1970s. The events are offered by Air Hollywood, a film studio that provides mock airplane […]

By Kenny Porpora September 23, 2014 Original Story For Anthony Toth, the obsession started at age 5 when he walked down the ramp of New York’s JFK Airport. He was flying to Zurich with his parents when he first stepped onto a Pan Am airplane. And in that moment, his life changed. “The Pan Am brand just resonated with me, and I instantly became obsessed with aviation,” Toth says. More than 40 years later, Toth re-created that moment for generations who weren’t around for Pan Am’s boom period — and for those nostalgic souls who were. At the Pan Am Experience at Air Hollywood in Los Angeles, guests can step back in time aboard a replica of the interior of […]

BIZ BASH — Why Jose Cuervo Built a Replica Airplane at J.F.K. Airport

By Michele Laufik December 9, 2015 Original Story The liquor brand used the Rolling Stones’ legendary 1972 tour as inspiration for its latest products and events. Amidst the holiday season bustle at John F. Kennedy International Airport, Jose Cuervo is looking to stand out with an unusual activation: a pop-up lounge made from repurposed aircraft parts. The experiential promotion, dubbed the Rolling Stone Tour Plane Experience, is part of a wider campaign for the liquor brand, one inspired by the Rolling Stones 1972 tour, which was informally known as the “cocaine and tequila sunrise tour.” To commemorate that notorious time, Jose Cuervo recently released two limited-edition bottles of Cuervo Especial and Reserva de la Familia featuring the Stones’ famous lapping […]

QUARTZ — Where Hollywood Goes to Make its Fake Planes Look Real (VIDEO)

By Erik Olsen March 22, 2016 Original Story When Martin Scorsese needed to shoot a scene of a drunken Leonardo DiCaprio on a jet plane for the film The Wolf of Wall Street, he could have built his own fake fuselage, or rented a 747. Of course, that would also have cost several hundred thousand dollars. So the director turned to Air Hollywood instead. It’s a 60,000-square foot cluster of low-slung warehouses on the outskirts of LA, where filmmakers can choose from four complete airplane interiors, including cockpits, bathrooms and working galleys. There is also a fake terminal, a security gate (with a half dozen variations of admonishing TSA boarding signs) and an expansive prop room offering authentic-looking boarding passes, […]
